Why am the worst election helper ever? - And other election nonsense.

Ok so if you didn't already know there is an election on on Saturday. Of course if your not in Australia (or possibly New Zealand) then you probably wouldn't know, in that case welcome to the wonders of democracy.

I sound uber discontent right? Well strangely enough I actually love the democratic process. I mean I was more excited to vote then I was to go to the pub when I turned 18. Since then there has only really been one party for me, and it's not just because it's my favourite colour.

Anyway back to my problems (they are clearly more important than the country's).

I have always seen myself as rather political but I am just not very good at it. I try to get involved every election and every time I end up depressed with a bunch of left over pamphlets that I haven't given out.

See I can' talk to strangers unless I'm drunk and well I don't think many people will pay attention to a drunk person slurring on about policy then announcing "shut up - this is my song" before breaking out into a terrible rendition of Miss independent by Kelly Clarkson. So I just hide in my cupboard with a doona and a book (which is pretty much how I solve every problem.

But this time I thought it would be different. I've grown up so much, I hardly ever hide in my cupboard... mainly because I don't have one anymore but i still hide in the corner of my room - not very often tho. I face up to most things and I am still doing uni. I didn't drop out or give up or anything.

It's time I thought - It's time for me to do something useful!



I am sick of waiting for the world to change --- almost as much as John Mayer (I'm also waiting for him to be less of a wanker but I am starting except that some things just aren't possible).

So I signed up to help out at a booth on election day. Only I was kind of late in getting back so I missed the training day and I forgot to change my address so they dropped all the stuff off at my old house. So now I don't really know what I'm supposed to do and I have no stuff. I know what I have to do but it's hard and part of me just wants to pretend its not happening.

So I am going to have to go to my old house. Hope that the new owners haven't thrown out all the stuff. Pick it up and apologise for not changing my address. Then I will have to try to convince my mother and my boyfriend to come with me on Saturday to hand out how to vote cards so that I don't get bullied by all the Liberal and Labor people who know what's going on.

I NEED TO DO THIS! Because otherwise the poor people at Erina south will have no Greens representation... How will they know how to vote or more importantly how to let all the other people standing outside the polling both know exactly how they are going to vote. This is beyond me and my petty problems. I must rise above my stupid mistakes for the sake of the party.

Gah, I don't think I can do it!

But I must... I feel like Luke Skywalker when Ben Kenobi's all like - "You must learn the ways of the Force if you're to come with me to Alderaan" and he's all like "Who said I was going to Alderaan?"

NEWS! 24/06/2010 - Football and Finally a Female Prime Minister.

Ok so as I'm not quite sure what this blog is going to be about yet I'm just going to write about anything and everything that interests me... and you will read it and like it, Damn IT!

Two really important pieces of news took place today, both are bittersweet.

SPORT!

Socceroo's Die Trying

Yes even after the abysmal record the Socceroos have achieved this World Cup, I still forced myself out of bed at 4am this morning to watch their final match against Serbia. Now I will be the first ti admit that I don't really know much about football except that the general idea is to kick the ball into the other teams net. Yet I still enjoy watching the game especially at an international level.

Despite the fact that I know very little about the game, I reserve most of comments to the colour of their uniforms, even I was able to notice that Australia just wasn't that good. I mean the game against Germany was well, the less said about it the better and even the draw against Guarna could have been better. (Although I was starting to think that maybe the refs had a bias against us - two red cards in two games to a our two best chances of getting goals.)

But after this mornings efforts they have fully redeemed themselves in my eyes. For starters the didn't get a red card, so awesomely had 11 players for the full match. They manged to score 2 goals - that's got to be good and they won. OK so they did let Serbia get one, but that's not bad really. I know that they really aren't good enough to go through to the next round, and if we had have manged on of the crazy scenarios in which we might have got through chances are we would have been knocked out in the next round.

I think that next time we can do it, and I am determined to be there to watch it. It's just so much fun, yelling at the telly and I bet it would be more being there... even with those crazy horn thingys. You don't even have to know the rules, all you need to know is that your team is right and the other guy totally tripped him!

So if you don't already know, google it. Julia Gillard is the new Prime Minister of I'm thinking a top 5 hottest soccer players - coming soon.

POLITICS!


Australia, the first female Prime Minister and quite possibly, as she joked, the first red headed PM.


Ok so this is epic news, and possibly should have gone first... but it's early days so I'm not really sure what to say about it. I mean as a woman its AWESOME. I mean a female in charge of the whole country, I have been waiting for this since my year six trip to Canberra. And Julia Gillard is fabulous, I've always liked her... she's charismatic and for want of a better phrase - she's got balls. But I disagree with her on a lot of policy issues but I am going to give her a chance to prove herself.

First lets just take a moment to think about poor Kev (Kevin Rudd, former PM). The poor guy was already under so much stress then out of nowhere he gets kicked out. He was in a hard place and I don't know what I would have done in his position so I find it hard to judge him. It always seems like his heart is in the right place he just, well kind of boring. Lets face it, he was basicly rent-a-prime minister, only there because Australia is still so misogynistic Julia knew she wouldn't get elected on her own. But I defy anyone not to tear up during his concession speech this morning. I know that I cry in pretty much anything but this was really sad. He looked so... lost, I kind of wanted to hug him...

Let's all go to Canberra and give Kev a hug... He's a good guy he's just not tough enough for politics. Maybe I should offer to help him move out of the lodge?

I hope for the sake of woman's politics that Julia is able to win the election and actually do some good. Maybe she will get over her fear of refugees... and be a bit more generous and hopefully she will change her stance on gay marriage because homophobia is soooo gay. Who I choose to love is my choice, just the same as you. It's sad because I thought people would be over label love by now, but I guess not.

I think having her as leader is probably a good thing for the election... I mean Tony Abbot is just so anti woman that no intelligent women could possible vote for him. I think Julia is smart enough to pull us through this shit, I just hope the general public can see it.

Come on Julia you are one kick ass chick, lets make history - for a good reason.

Women in history is really interesting so watch out for the top 5 women of history.
